Current Cycling Advocacy measures being addressed by the Washington State Legislature. HB (House Bill) and SB (Senate Bill).

HB 1045/SB 5066: Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill

Allows cities to lower the speed limit on non-arterials to 20mph without having to pay for an engineering study. On April 17, passed the Senate 45-2 and is now on its way to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

SB 5564/ HB 1743: The Safe Passing Bill

Clarifies safe passing practices on rural roads to increase distance given to pedestrians and bicyclists. Potential safe passing distance for cyclists would be three feet. Bill currently held for session.

HB 1233: Inclusion of health benefits into state transportation goals.

Bill may result in increased funding to walking, biking, running projects that support healthy transportation lifestyles. Bill was pulled from Rules to the House floor, but did not get a vote before the policy cut off on March 13. It will now be placed in the Rules Committee for the remainder of the 2013 legislative session.

SB 5506: Funding for Safe Routes to School

Protects the funding levels reached in the past couple of years from both state and federal sources. Working to maintain federal funding levels suggested in SB 5506 within the House and Senate transportation budgets.

SB 5141: Motorcycles stop and proceed through traffic control signals.

Addresses signal loop detectors don’t detect the motorcycle. Potential amendments with the Washington Road Riders Association to address the needs of bicycles. Senate and House committees “do pass” vote. It has been pulled by the House Rules Committee and awaits a floor vote.

Eastern Washington Races 2013

Road cycling

The 2013 race season has started out well for Wheatland Wheelers riders. In the Tour of Walla Walla several Wheatland Wheelers riders had great postings. In particular, Wheatland Wheeler Kevin Thonney won the Criterium CAT 4 race.

Joe Escudero took 2nd place in the 60+ division in the Liberty Road Race in Spokane.

Ronde Van Palouse Race, several Wheatland Wheelers riders did well. And there was a good showing by Wheatland Wheelers riders in the Ontario Stage Race in Oregon.

Mountain Biking

Justin Bannerman took 3rd place, CAT 1 in the 50+ division in the Echo, Oregon Red 2 Red race.

Several Wheatland Wheelers riders did well in the Whidbey Island Cooking in the Kettles mountain bike races.

Wheatland Wheelers Bicycle Club Opens Voting for 2013 Officers

The Wheatland Wheelers Bicycle Club has opened voting for club officers to serve during the 2013 year. Members will vote for officers in eleven positions. The candidates are: President: J. Andrew Rodriguez; Vice-President: Michael Gordon, Phil Hoffman; Treasurer: Jeff Bolander; Secretary: Luke Waggoner; Social Director: Lish Riley, Nikki Sharp; Race Director: Justin Bannerman, Kaler Marshal; Media Relations: Maureen McManaman; Bicycle Advocacy: Charles Stanger. Three Board positions will also be filled. The Board candidates are: Patrick Buob, Walt Keyes, Greg Knowles, Kara Nielsen, Kevin Thonney, Mike Vandiver, Elisa Weinman Pogue, and Kevin Pogue. Members may also vote for write-in candidates.

Ballots are available at Allegro Cyclery and the Bicycle Barn. Election results will be announced at a club meeting.

Nominations Open for 2013 Club Officers

The Wheatland Wheelers Bicycle Club has opened nominations for club officers to serve during 2013. Eleven positions are open: President; Vice-President; Treasurer; Secretary; Race Director; Social Director; Media Relations; Bicycle Advocacy; and three board positions. Nominations can be made at Allegro Cyclery and at Bicycle Barn. Nominations can also be sent via email to

Nominations will close on October 24th. Ballots will be available at both bicycle shops once a slate of candidates has been compiled. Election results will be announced at a club meeting on November 14th. Membership dues for 2013 must be paid in order to be eligible to vote. Annual club dues are $20.00 and can be paid at Allegro Cyclery or at Bicycle Barn. Membership benefits include a 10% discount on parts and accessories at both bicycle shops.

Spring Season Kick-Off Open Club Meeting & BBQ – TONIGHT

Come get your complimentary hamburger and blinky light as we kick-off the spring riding season and our 2012 Light Up the Valley campaign!

Where: Wildwood Park on the corner of Boyer and Division in Walla Walla

When: Monday, April 16th starting at 6:30 PM

Bring a friend and a bag of chips, a non-alcoholic drink, salad or dessert to share and join in the fun!

We’ll have a short presentation by our club officers on upcoming events and activities and a couple of contests to keep things interesting.

Car parking is limited at Wildwood Park but there is plenty of room for bicycles so ride if you can.

Team Kits have just arrived and will be distributed at the Meeting.

Ice Cream Social Rides

We’re just a few short weeks away from our first Ice Cream Social ride of 2012. We will have 4 different ride options this year so riders of all ability levels can enjoy the fun.

In case you haven’t been before, here are some more details. We all meet at Wildwood Park at 6:00 PM on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. At 6:15 PM we send start sending out the ride groups. We all enjoy a great ride and return to the park for Ice Cream!

New this year! We will have 4 ride options:

  • Family Ride – nice slow pace, 6 mi distance
  • Cruiser Ride – slow to moderate pace, 8 – 10 mi distance
  • Social Ride – moderate pace, 13-18 mi distance
  • Training Ride – fast pace, 25+ mi distance
